How to make selections in Photoshop CS2???

in tutorial tells in 2 different sections make selection i'm guessing marquee tool. first in header section (which looks sorta triangular) , second menu bar ask select top half. in both request tell fill in white , turn opacity 5%. knowledge when use marquee tool have no clu how made marquee tool "hug" graphic way in images in tutorial. in second 1 seems cut rounded rectangle in half marquee hugs curves of top half of rounded rectangle. plus when use marquee tool , try "fill" won't let me. had use rectangle marquee tool , "layer via copy" cut image in half fill in white , reduce opacity 5%. seem same result definetely feel there's i'm missing. in total training dvd's remember learning use left , right arrow key tighten marquee object believe in fireworks. there shortcut in ps? please help!........ frustrated dedicated learning web design.
for first selection ctrl+click on vector mask thumbnail load selection , select polygonal lasso tool , set subtract selection in options bar , cut first selection that. same thing second one
