Thread: How to check which program is using the internet connection

i'm using ubuntu 9.10. internet connection adsl have set using "pppoeconf". connection starts @ boot up. can start if needed using "sudo pon dsl-provider" , can stop using "poff dsl-provider".

noticed when start computer, there program (or programs) connecting automatically internet , downloading , uploading lot of data. data transferred can exceed 200 mb or 300 mb in hour. don't know being uploaded or downloaded. know sure no file sharing programs bittorrent clients started @ bootup strange data downloaded , uploaded without me sharing files or downloading files explicitly. update software not run default have opted start manually.

there application shows programs connected particular port , transmitting , receiving data?

in windows xp use program called "what's running" lists programs using different ports in local machine , remote ip addresses program connected to. shows program transmitting , receiving data @ point in time. there similar program linux?

internet connection data limited package otherwise not have bothered.

try out 1 of various firewalls linux. i'm pretty sure 1 of these show what's accessing internet, give ips can block.
