create mask turns ellipse into rectangle...aaarrrrggghhh

i'm new cs3 , i'm doing alright flash.  however, recent encounter illustrator (13.0.2) irritating least.

 

simple task:

1) start illustrator, select 'new', , set size 175 pix 175 pix

2) in layer window, create 2 sublayers (2 , 3)

3) drag jpg image (157 x157)  bottom sublayer (2)

4) hide sublayer 2 , create rectangle (90 x 120) in sublayer 3 (which above sublayer 2 in layer window).

5) 'effect -> convert shape -> ellipse' rectangle relative 0 pix both dimensions. see ellipse. wow!

6) 'arrange -> bring front' ellipse.

7) unhide sublayer 2

7) in layer window click on layer 1 click make/release clipping mask.

 

voila, mask works rectangle. where's ellipse?

 

i've search web , wasted 4 hours trying varying tips , solutions.  still no elliptical mask, rectangular.

 

how did become soooo difficult?

expand appearance of effect converted rectangle original shape has not been changed still rectangle.

 

if select elipse see selected rectangle not ellipse shape selection.

 

if wanted real ellipse use ellipse tool if want enter dimension numerically take ellipse tool , click on canvas , ellipse dialog appear enter dimensions click ok , voila , ellipse of dimensions.

 

now make mask.

 

if happy ellipse have wrote expand appearance of 1 have , use release mask first expand make mask again.

 

the ellipse tool under marquis tool.
