Thread: Updated Ubuntu, now booting is a problem

i'm getting dread updating ubuntu, spend hours (or days) fixing issues occur result. can't imagine computer novice handling this.

1. a few hours ago, booted ubuntu 2.6.31-17... no issues.
2. update manager says there updates... give go-ahead.
3. some of updates pertaining new kernel 2.6.31-19. still, go-ahead.
4. upon rebooting, grub menu choose topmost option 2.6.31-19.
5. first boot screen, goes black. wait.
6. hit <enter> , rewarded "initramfs" prompt.
7. alert onscreen says "/dev/sdg1" not exist. not surprising, sdc1 boot partition.
8. eventually find if edit grub entry 2.6.31-17 (old kernel) "sdg1" "sdc1", can ubuntu boot. well, not always... half of time works. hate non-determinism.
9. editing 2.6.31-19 never yields complete boot.
10. tried issuing "grub-install /dev/sdc1" has "fixed" things in past. didn't work.

i'm not sure go here. there elaborate grub2 tutorials can read try boot options pointing correct drive. should do?

ever since ubuntu made grub2 standard, i've found boot situation nightmare. grub2 keeps installing hd0 without asking... winxp soft-raid 0 array... , i'm scared witless left corrupted raid. have jump through hoops fix mbr. boot usb disk... ask grub leave other disk drives alone?

in advance constructive advice.

ps. have custom nvidia drivers installed in 2.6.31-17. must reinstall (hidden recompile) 2.6.31-19?

well, @ least can boot ubuntu, means you're having little less problem of poor souls.

quick couple of questions. did install karmic, or did upgrade tfrom jaunty?

if upgraded jaunty, did upgrade grub legacy grub2?

if upgradedyour grub or installed ubuntu karmic 9.10 cd, try run following command:
