Thread: Brand new Ubuntu user - Static IP problem

hi

have installed ubuntu 9.10 on personal computer.

i'm battling figure out how enable static internet connection. suggested on ubuntu pages have been attempting manually type in necessary numbers under 'ipv4 settings' tab, located in network connections/editing auto eth0

first problem not confidently know ip address. after bringing terminal , typing command 'ifconfig', bring similar to:

eth0 link encap:ethernet hwaddr 00:15:c5:82:50:cc
broadcast multicast mtu:1500 metric:1
rx packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
tx packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
rx bytes:0 (0.0 b) tx bytes:0 (0.0 b)
interrupt:16

lo link encap:local loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 scope:host
loopback running mtu:16436 metric:1
rx packets:13247 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
tx packets:13247 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

somehow need find out following:

1. ip address: (i can't connect online reverse ip site - i'm guessing different 'lo' internal ip?)
2. netmask:
3. gateway: (i think know - came router using?)
4. dns servers: (can use free googledns 8.8.8.8?)

appreciated!

i consider adding new connection in network manager, , specifying settings in there. gnome network manager has... issues.

p.s: smaller font rock, had stand on other side of road read post.
