i have same mobile broadband modem , use regularly without problems.

verizon umw190 called "global ready" 3g modem, meaning connects both cdma , gsm networks. alas, ubuntu 9.10's network manager identifies modem gsm only, until gets fixed, connecting on cdma network (such verizon's network in us) requires use additional application.

install "gnome-ppp" -- application use connect -- can find under applications -> ubuntu software center, or under system -> administration -> synaptic package manager. (once have installed it, may want restart computer undo else may have done while trying solve problem.)

use modem, following:

step 1. plug modem in.
step 2. launch gnome-ppp administrator (e.g., press alt-f2 , type "gksu gnome-ppp"), , configure following settings:

  • modem tab
    • device: /dev/ttyacm0 (in case, auto-detect button correctly identified device)
    • type: usb modem (do not leave analog modem!)
    • speed: 460800
    • phone line: tone
    • volume: off

  • options tab
    • minimize: checked
    • dock in notification area: checked

click close. fill in fields in main gnome ppp window:

  • username: 1234567890@vzw3g.com (any 10-digit number works me)
  • password: vzw
  • phone number: #777

step 3. click connect. should it.

disconnect, click on gnome-ppp dock notification icon.

these settings saved next time need connect.
