not a new hobby, but restoring an old one (like, circa 1995 hobby)

back in day, did hiking/camping. hiked 100 miles of appalachian trail, via hurricane island outward bound school.

several years ago, acquired hiking pack, tent, backpacking stove, , few other things (that have find again). still need buy sleeping bag, water filter, hiking cook-set, , other stuff have tagged on amazon wish list. nothing expensive really. found old gps years ago (magellan meridian platinum). (thought dead, still works  :o  :) )

my thinking is, regulating diet, have lost few pounds, @ least under 300 pounds (not ;) ). need more active hobby burn off pounds. can integrate of hobbies, photography, , possible astronomy, if trail safe enough not have worry falling , crushing camera or telescope. though telescope may not practical, hiking... (bulky , heavy)

not sure if can handle being off-grid (or hiking itself  :o ), think should give go, come spring. more fun if had hike with, sake of conversation, have no friends here (in maine), ain't happening ;)

i wish there way use arduino project take me, camera, lights, gps, , on, think have enough batteries carry around. now, have keep hobby alive, can follow through plans, , lose weight. :d

as point of amusement, while looking gear, found this on ebay. know "roughing it" when take k-cup pods along you. ;) :d

probably not application arduino in backpacking. thing can come bearbag alarm. maybe super loud alarm scare off bear getting bearbag? figure out way disable thing don't disturb peace of wilderness when retrieve bag next morning, maybe wireless fob? think people moving bear cans nowadays because darn bears @ getting bags , there isn't suitable place hang one.

even if can't use arduino skills, there lot of opportunity "hacking" backpacking gear, if you're getting going lightweight. through hiked pacific crest trail in 2005 of gear (tent, sleeping bag, stove, cookpot, stuff sacks) homemade. every bit of commercial gear modified in way make more light weight. love add unnecessary features products make them "better" competition.

when you're hiking 2700 miles every gram counts! short trip still makes huge difference not having lug heavy pack or maybe make more feasible add weight/bulk of telescope. used have philosophy every bit of backpacking gear should ultra heavy duty , brought along lot of excess stuff. 800 mile hike ridiculously heavy pack in 2004 made me see light. knew in trouble when wore myself out walking across town highway hitchhike out trailhead start trip!
