Thread: How to remove partition?

how remove partition through 9.04? have gparted installed through apt-get. removing not problem, problem how heck know partition using? prevously installed 9.10 before , went back, reinstalled 8.10 through linux guru? friend (see question mark? see why mean that). i, myself, upgraded 9.04. when reinstalling 8.10, see 2 partition on hard drive, first ntfs (window xp) , ext4 partition (but live cd see ext3 partition). attempted delete ext4 partition, did nothing make me think did something. refreshed screen , found out ext4 still there. ask linux guru friend out. went through custom setting remove partition , think did it. , display welcome screen set account. guts telling me didn't remove ext4 partition. while looking away, went partitioner screen , found out still there. screw , went ahead create new partition 8.10 (but shorten window partition need important things.) after installation, went ok. went place , "sudo apt-get gparted" bring gui parted. strange thing puzzled me. ubuntu 8.10 using show 50 gb filesystem, gparted show 60 , 70 gb ext 3 partition. confused how gparted think have more gb set for. went root directory of 8.10 right click>proprieties gb info. displayed have around 65gb filesystem. puzzled why showing that. thought possible if mount ext4 partition , able right info. usual, can't mount ext4 partition error said gparted show both ext3 partition, not 1 of them displayed ext4. both of them ext3. remember give ext4 partition more gb 8.10 , found 1 partition. when checked 70gb partition properties. said mounted 60gb 1 not mounted. puzzled why ext4 mounted ext3 not mounted. again not using livecd time. using 8.10 partition , on desktop gparted open. decided gamble , tell gparted remove "ext3" 70gb. error show , said cant removed because mounted.

sitting there , wondering "how heck did 8.10 using ext4 filesystem if can't mount on desktop can mount fine through gparted?" trying understand happening. reason why want remove ext4 partition, can give partition ntfs partition, giving space window need important things.

remember why couldn't remove partition. thought mount issue remember something. ext4 partition under sda4 , sda5 while current partition using sda6 , sda7. when attempt remove sda4 , sda5, said can't remove because of level of sda.

when reinstalling 8.10, see 2 partition on hard drive, first ntfs (window xp) , ext4 partition
it easier , not ask question if deleted ext4 partition , on free space installed ubuntu.but past.if have valuable data them , make fresh install.this time can download jaunty , install avoid upgrading intrepid.good idea make separate home partition during install in case of reinstalling, fresh installing.... settings , files/data safe on separate partition.
