Thread: Some simple questions

trying few simple things , though i've searched quite bit, answers i've found seem cumbersome figure must wrong. looking expert advice on simple way things.

1. make disk image of 9.10 system (formatted ext3, btw) on syology cs407 nas can bare metal restore. why couple of clicks on mac , windows boxes, far not easy on jaunty? did miss something?

2. drivers. why can't have automatic wrapper windows drivers can use printer or scanner, or simple point , click driver install native drivers? have ethernet connected brother mfc-7820n, , samsung clp-315 runs off cs407 installed , working on jaunty, way more work expected. easy, automatic or point , click way install drivers?

3. graphics drivers. have decent cards in big boxes, nvidia gtx 200 series. when kernel updates, have uninstall , reinstall graphics driver. there easy way keep working?

4. there 1 flavor of linux distro has consistent standard user interface? able move things around, menus consistent (and ever hate ms ribbon!). i've tried ubuntu.

linux installs have come long, long way old days, , such point , click operation wonder i'm doing wrong. bound have sorted these things.

3. if using proprietary nvidia drivers, yes, have reinstall drivers each kernel upgrade. nvidia drivers binary "blobs" , not open source. work properly, need hooked kernel. every time upgrade kernel, need rehook proprietary drivers kernel.

4. standard user interface, have choice of desktop environments: gnome, kde, xfce, fluxbox, etc. when stick gnome instance, have nearly-consistent interface, regardless of distro running.

fact linux destop environments heavily customizable means each installation , feel different--even though may using gnome.

there distro called linspire (formerly known lindows) tried create consistent (and more windows-like) environment.

combine 26k packages available means applications won't consistent in chosen environment. instance can run kde applicaitions in gnome (such k3b), don't pick gnome color scheme.

linux mint distro has more-consistent theme, start customize , add applications, system more disorganized.

if want consistency, try mac os x.
