Thread: Ubuntu failed to work with disparate memory DIMMs

i trying out several versions of ubuntu live cds on dell gx270 (pentuim 4 2.8 ghz).

on weekend copied failing (windows) drive neighbor on same system using 512 mb memory 2x256 pc2700 dimms. worked fine including installing ubuntu computer , using copy partition skipping 5 unreadable files. returned new drive neighbor both windows xp , ubuntu installed it.

today decided upgrade memory using spare 1gb pc3200 dimm 1 of 256mb pc2700 dimms. gx270 has 2 memory slots. ran xp on machine , did number of things on few hours without issue.

wanted backup xp partition booted clonezilla , booted text/graphical progress screen garbled , failed error destination drive full not possible copying 20 gb partition drive 700 gb free.

booted same ubuntu 9.10 live cd had used day before , made kde desktop experienced number of issues not consistent on each try:
(a) double click on install spin cd drive nothing.
(b) firefox experienced crash.
(c) screen asked password ubuntu live cd.
(d) various crash error messages components.

sorry not being more specific each time little different. @ point in process ran memory test live cd menu , made though 7 passes without error (20 minutes or so).

pulled second 256mb dimm , using single 1gb dimm installed ubuntu livecd without issue , happily running , upgrading type this.

so, sorry long narrative, question whether linux more sensitive memory configuration on machine windows xp. plan upgrade second 1 gb dimm in future (so windows run without thrashing hard drive) buy identical dimm.
