Thread: Dual Boot (Karmic/XP), 2 HDDs, 1 HDD Not Found

i have set system dual boot karmic , winxp. ubuntu 9.10 on master drive (ide ata) winxp on slave. grub2 set per instructions, have winxp set default os.

problem. on 1 occasion, turned off computer ubuntu proper procedure. next morning, bios failed detect winxp hdd. able remedy moving cable ubuntu hdd winxp hdd--i have hdds jumped cable select--and booting winxp.

before shut down computer previous night, had been accessing winxp disk copying information , files ubuntu hdd , did not unmount winxp disk before shutting down computer. later, returned cable it's original positioning--ubuntu master/winxp slave--and computer booted no issue. since has done several days after, thought not unmounting winxp disk may have been reason bios not detecting winxp hdd.

forward yesterday. rebooted ubuntu winxp have bios not detect winxp hdd, again. time had not been accessing winxp hdd, evidently, unmounting may not important first thought. switching cable again allowed me boot winxp.

though have since switched cable back, have yet boot ubuntu , winxp. wondering if seeing may known issue or if may sign of possible problem.

thoughts , suggestions?

p.s. bios battery replaced few months ago, still pretty fresh.

this sounds more hardware issue software 1 me, , answer question not unmounting winxp before shutting down, can assure make no difference @ all, ubuntu unmount partitions mounted before shutting down automatically, in same way if partitions had been mounted automatically fstab @ boot.

perhaps worth checking disk(s) manufacturers diagnostic applications may on ultimate boot cd or using disk utility on ubuntu 9.10, though don't know if work on ntfs partition/disk.
