Thread: Wireless Problems: Acer Aspire One running Karmic

acer aspire one, running kubuntu 9.10 netbook remix

realtek semiconductor co., ltd. rtl8101e/rtl8102e pci express fast ethernet controller (rev 02)
atheros communications inc. ar5001 wireless network adapter (rev 01)

acer aspire has worked happily number of home wireless networks public wi-fi in number of usual places starbucks, , on east coast main line. got vodafone 3g dongle, , part of process of trying make work, seem have stopped system's ability connect wireless networks. i'm running 9.10, doesn't recognise vodafone dongles out of box, installed packages betavine respositories try make dongle work. these included

ozerocdoff_0.4-2_i386.deb
usb-modeswitch_0.9.7_i386.deb
vodafone-mobile-connect_2.10.01-1_all.deb

installed kde package, kwlan, in attempt try detect dongle. unfortunately seemed have adverse effects on system. first disappear network icon on top bar, knetworkmanager icon disappeared, , lost ability connect wireless network.

i'm paying penalty working quickly, , in unplanned way, , welcome suggestions on should wireless network connection again; once i've done i'll try make vodafone connection work.

know

1. network light @ bottom right of keyboard on
2. when change boot order, , run live ubuntu 9.04 usb stick, machine detects wireless networks, , little turning icon on top bar appears
3. else on default kubuntu 9.10 installation works, apart wireless networking, , can access internet using network cable router.

gratefully received!

hi john.

remember gnome network manager not getting along wicd (and me needing manually re-install gnome network manager after removing wicd). of course, sounds using kde environment, not gnome- may not applicable.

according page, can run wicd in lieu of kwifimanager:

http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplan...orials/6527/1/

can obtain wicd (or read on it) here:

http://wicd.sourceforge.net/download.php

haven't run kde in ages , don't recall package manager called (it's synaptic package manager under gnome though), might able re-install kwifimanager using kde software package manager. think i'll reboot using kde , see wireless network uses if can linked up. i'll advise if find helpful.

luck.

edit: couldn't wireless work under kde either (but works flawlessly under gnome 2.26.1- both 64-bit ubuntu 9.04)- hmmm... kde "package manager" said "software & programs" or similar- not 1 under gnome. can't post kde unfortunately.
